Singapore and Indonesia – 2020

The DELAWARE CHORAL SCHOLARS have evolved over the course of six years as the core ensemble of the Choral Symposium in France, comprised of current members and alumni of the University of Delaware Chorale, in addition to other accomplished singers from all over the United States. While the France symposium in Aix has run its course, the DELAWARE CHORAL SCHOLARS will continue as an international touring ensemble, leading out with a thirteen-day tour of Asia, beginning with several days of rehearsal in Singapore, followed by a series of competitive events at the 9th Bali Choral Competition in Indonesia.

A choir from last year’s competition

While “first dibs” will be given to current members of the current UD Chorale, we anticipate that we will be seeking between 15 and 25 additional singers to create a balanced ensemble of 48 voices. There will be two rehearsal weekends (February 15-16 and May 2-3, 2020), as the repertoire will be above and beyond that of the current Chorale, with the intention of positioning the choir for an intense period of rehearsal once we arrive in Asia.

We anticipate departing the United States in the late evening of Tuesday, July 21 which will put us in Singapore on Thursday morning, July 23. That will provide several days to adjust to the new time zone, while rehearsing during the day in preparation for the festival. On Tuesday, July 28, we’ll make the three-hour flight to Bali where we’ll begin an extensive series of competitive events, hopefully advancing to the Grand Prix round at the end of the festival on Saturday, August 1. We’ll hang in Bali for a day or two to celebrate this landmark experience before heading for home on Tuesday, August 4. (Interested in deviating so you have more more time to see Asia? Be sure to check the FAQ page for information as to how you might do that.)

This project has been made possible due to a remarkably generous gift to the UD Choral Studies program (along with support of the College of Arts and Sciences) that has resulted in a significant endowment to provide funding for, among other things, international travel that celebrates the long and rich choral tradition at UD. To that end, scholarship assistance is available to highly qualified singers that roughly underwrites one-half of the cost of the tour. If you are traveling with the group from New York City and don’t wish to extend the duration of your stay abroad, you will probably want to purchase the air-inclusive package. If you would like to meet us en-route, and/or stay longer to continue your explorations of Singapore, Indonesia, or neighboring countries (Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia are all quite close!) you will probably want to choose the land only package and book your own plane ticket. Our staff can help you coordinate those arrangements should you so desire.

In the meantime, here’s the basic cost breakdown:
